Werengouw House is a terraced 1960s home is reimagined through a ground floor transformation. Internally, the space is reconfigured to simplify the entrance while connecting it visually through the open plan living and dining space to the rear garden.

An exposed red column divides the floor plan into two equal squares, giving the space a clear logic. To the rear, a new light timber-framed extension expands the space horizontally and vertically with a subtle increase in height.

A floor-to-ceiling opening, fitted with a carefully proportioned timber window, frames the rear garden, while above, a long rooflight draws additional light deep into the space.

The architect’s intervention has transformed the space into one that is open and flexible. We sought to capture this openness and the flexibility it facilitates, evident from the entrance right through to the rear living area.

Looking to convey this experience, we created a sequence of images that traces the journey through the space from front to back.

The custom-designed timber-framed window to the rear was also a key element of the design. Capturing its proportions and the rhythm it creates, from inside in relation to the garden and from outside in relation to the whole building, was another priority.

We began with a shot of the front elevation to establish the typology of the 1960s terraced home and provide context for the project.

We then worked inward from the entrance through to the open plan space, tracing the procession from one area to the next, image by image.

Finally, we chose to capture a twilight shot, as it simultaneously showed the timber-framed window within the broader rear elevation and offered a view deep into the interior, from the rear living area through to the kitchen.
